Living with Louie- Communicating with family members with Dementia- 2 hours

This two hour workshop includes a case study about how one Twin Cities family coped with the communication changes in a parent with increasing dementia. The program includes positive and effective strategies to decrease care givers' frustrations. Through video samples and group discussions, you will gain greater insight into how to communicate more effectively with dementia patients. This program has been presented to nursing students and care giver groups.

The speaker, Marlene Schoenberg, Ed.M. is a speech/language pathologist with over 15 years of experience in rehab services and 15 years doing business speech consultation.

Returning to Work after Brain Injury

This program will address ADA accommodations that have been made for employees returning to work after recovery from brain injury. We will discuss the effects of aphasia, dysarthria, and visual and reading deficits, as well as pinpoint dilemmas in the work re-entry process. Video examples will help illustrate key points. The consultant will also discuss how co-workers can better relate to an employee returning to work after a stroke. This seminar will be facilitated by an experienced speech/ language pathologist. This can be customized for a specific work team which is adjusting to the recovery of a team member. .

Disabilities Awareness Seminar- 1.5 hours

In this program, Marlene Schoenberg, Ed.M. ccc/sp discusses speech disabilities in the workplace such as: aphasia, dysarthria, cerebral palsy and stuttering. In addition, she will moderate a panel discussion of employees with disabilities who will discuss their experiences and sensitivities. In the past, panel members have included employees who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, diabetic and have mobility impairments. The audience has an opportunity to ask the panelists questions. Communication tips are given for caring and respectful interaction with people with disabilities.
